Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once headed the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the technology organization said it accepted Summers' determination to resign.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," the organization stated.
Congressional Action
This news follows after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would require the US justice department to release its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the desk of President Trump for signature. The President has said he intends to sign the legislation, after changing his position on the subject following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected messages made public by the legislative panel recently included several high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails indicated that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to link the academic to influential global figures.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, he expressed he took "total ownership for my poor decision to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to rebuild trust and mend relationships with the individuals most important to me".
Professional History
The professor held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He led the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public roles earlier on this week, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in DC where he was a prominent member, verified that Summers was not connected with the organization.
He became part of the board of the AI company, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
