The French government urges residents to depart the West African nation immediately following militant fuel blockade

Long queues have been snaking around fuel outlets

The French Republic has issued an urgent recommendation for its nationals in the landlocked nation to evacuate as soon as feasible, as jihadist fighters continue their restriction of the state.

The French foreign ministry advised citizens to depart using airline services while they are still accessible, and to avoid overland travel.

Energy Emergency Escalates

A 60-day petroleum embargo on the West African country, implemented by an al-Qaeda-aligned group has upended everyday activities in the capital, the urban center, and other regions of the surrounded African nation - a ex-colonial possession.

France's declaration occurred alongside the global shipping giant - the world's biggest maritime firm - announcing it was suspending its activities in the country, citing the blockade and declining stability.

Insurgent Actions

The jihadist group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has caused the blockage by assaulting fuel trucks on main routes.

The country has no coast so all fuel supplies are brought in by road from adjacent countries such as the neighboring country and Ivory Coast.

Diplomatic Actions

Last month, the US embassy in the capital declared that non-essential diplomatic staff and their families would depart Mali during the situation.

It said the petroleum interruptions had influenced the energy distribution and had the "possibility of affecting" the "general safety conditions" in "unforeseen manners".

Governance Situation

The West African nation is currently ruled by a armed forces council headed by General Goïta, who first seized power in a coup in recent years.

The military council had public approval when it took power, committing to handle the long-running security crisis prompted by a autonomy movement in the northern region by ethnic Tuaregs, which was later co-opted by Islamist militants.

Foreign Deployment

The international peace mission and Paris's troops had been deployed in the past decade to address the increasing militant activity.

Both have withdrawn since the military assumed control, and the military government has contracted Moscow-aligned fighters to tackle the insecurity.

Nevertheless, the Islamist rebellion has persisted and significant areas of the northern and eastern territories of the state remain away from official jurisdiction.
