Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.

One snub was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to realize that securing World Cup glory will likely need contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's warm embrace.

The manager desires Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of using it in the right way. Personal talent is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when fame takes over. Still, a point has been made.

Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed the national side qualify at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel discuss valuing the squad's spirit and values. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; leaving him out again would have made his squad place in serious doubt.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is willing to take tough decisions.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel stated. “Jude possesses the edge. It takes that kind of fire to reach the heights that he has. We all must support him and create an environment which he can [have] this edge towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham took up the spotlight at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming meaningless matches against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker who needs coaching. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to reach his best recently but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his display in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s style as a result.

It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play central. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”

He conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. Believe he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

The manager discussed Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and Foden drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.

Meanwhile, it is also a moment to foster the understanding with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in an international match against Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair linked up for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.

“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager desires him committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
